Background:

A majority of the Nepalese population live in rural Nepal. A majority of this rural population are essentially agriculturists. Agriculture is by far the largest employer in Nepal and provides this population the ready opportunity to be self-sufficient in food basic human necessity. This segment of the population is also the most suitably place to be largely self-reliant, vis-à-vis essential and basic rural needs. A majority of rural Nepal is a collection of small, scattered and remote settlements. There is urgent need to make sure that the villages of Nepal are not only perpetually prepared for coping with the variety of consequences emerging form their isolated condition, but that this same preparedness could also provide them the prospects for wholesome rural living, and a reasonably pleasant life. Any strategy for realizing well-being, particularly of this majority, needs to be tailored taking into consideration the geographic, topographic, demographic, social and economic characteristics of the area.

With 70% of Nepal’s population living in rural Nepal and largely depend on agriculture for their livelihood, it means that if each rural, agriculture family, grew their own food and produced just 30-35% more than what they need, they could, apart from comfortably feeding themselves also feed Nepal’s entire urban and non-agriculture population.
